Porcelain Market and Village

Given it is currently 4:45 p.m. I do forget about the night Mary Anne had. She kept her parents up on and off all night. She went to bed easily but then woke at 10:00 p.m. screaming. The poor thing seemed so scared. It wasn't so easy to calm her. She did not want to be held nor did she want to be in her crib. At one point Mary Anne and I were both crying. :) I felt so sad for her. She is such a happy baby that it is easy to forget the transition she is going through. I think she was having some sort of nightmare. She eventually did settle but continued to make loud cries sporadically throughout the night which of course startled us awake each time. I hope tonight she has a better night. I think adopting internationally (like my friend Michelle said at one time) is like Parenting Boot Camp. We are thrown into parenting very quickly! :)

Today even though we were out all morning we do seem to be getting on a bit better routine. We are starting to learn some of her cues...like when she wants a bottle, when she is hungry and when she is tired. She is the life of the party when we are out and about!

This morning we travelled to the Porcelain Market and bought a little tea set and chop sticks for Mary Anne.

We then travelled to a village outside of Nanchang. The poverty was overwhelming. The water comes from wells. Raw sewage runs in the dirt paths. There is no electricity. No young people were around. We saw only elderly and one child. Skinny chickens and ducks roamed free. We saw the thinnest dog we have ever seen. It was like stepping back in time 500 years. We were both so shocked and shaken. It reminded us that we have everything and far more. This village, although not Mary Anne's past, is Mary Anne's past. Holding Mary Anne while walking through this village stirred up deep emotions for me. Although emotional we were glad to be able to see a village.

This afternoon we had some play time in the room and then went to the pool. She went down for her nap at 3:00 and is still sleeping. We are going to wake her now and head to another couple's room for some play time and a drink before dinner.

Here are some photos of the morning.

Christine and Iain, It is 6:30 in the morning here in Belle River and Denise just called me. She was thinking about Mary Anne. At the hospital they have some babies that will not take a bottle while being feed. They have to prop the bottle in order to get them to drink from their bottle. This could be what Mary Anne is used to.

Christine and Iain,
That should be, The babies will not take the bottle while being held. They need to be laying done with the bottle propped for them.
We will chat later.
Love you

Christine,
It may be tough to setle her at times but even when they are born from us, there are many times we can not settle our own children. Your situation is so different and much more difficult, but I know that if anyone can be there and try and make her feel loved and comforted, it is you!! You have done it for my own children even when I can't. You definitly have it in your heart to be the best Mother! Keep strong and happy and know that she will know how much you love her and want to give her happiness.
Thinking of you guys all the time, xoxox

Christine I am so glad that you got to go to the village. We were very moved by that experience. We were fortunate enough to go to a village that had lots of children. Although very poor they all seemed very happy. It is startling to be witness to that level of poverty. We were all very emotional that day but agreed that it was one of the highlights of our trip.

just a thought maybe Mary Ann was somehow responding to seeing The Village. It may have triggered something in her... I hope she has a better night tonight..

Much Love

I am wondering if Mary Anne was having a night terror? My niece and nephew use to have them... oh it was awful... hope it was a one of thing... poor little munchkin... oh she looks SO cute in that little blue hat... hehe... what an experience to see that village... makes me realize just how lucky I am... though I am sure that alot of them are 'happy' without all the material stuff... then again I maybe wrong...
Look forward to the next adventure... take care and kisses to Mary Anne...

Hey - my brother Michael (who is now 6) used to wake up and scream at night. We thought he was having night terrors or remembering China and realizing when he woke up that he was no longer there. It would break my poor mom's heart as she would be up with him for an hour as he would sob. We realized later - he had to go to the bathroom and was used to going on a potty, not used to waking up at night and going in a diaper. Do you think maybe that could be part of it? You guys look great!

Hey Iain, Christine and Mary Anne:

Thank you for sharing that incredible experience with us!! Welcome to parenting in the 'deep end'! Sometimes you just have to sit by and cry too. No sage words of advise, just a note to tell you that I miss you like crazy and I hope you are having the time of your life.
The angels are missing a member=)
Love,

Bruce was gobsmacked when he checked your blog for the first time since you left for China. It's such a wonderful history for all of you to have. We wanted you to know how happy we are for you both. MaryAnne is a lucky girl to have such great parents!
Lotsa love

That looks like the very same village Derek toured when he was there 9 years ago! Maybe they all look the same.
Beth had night terrors for years. Lots of loud calling out and crying and thrashing. I just sat beside her and waited it out. She still will occ. yell/scream out. Who knows why? Babies and crying are natural and sometimes we read too much into it........hope it changes as she settles soon.
Take care.....you will be home soon and all will be well.
God Bless

me again.......and one more thing. I think Mary Anne is getting cuter by the day!!! She still has that slightly confused "deer in the headlight look". She is a brave wee girl as they all are.....

Guess what time it is here!!??

From 2 Mom's to another Mom - you are doing a great job. We have teenagers and we still cry at times because we don't know what they want!! Hang in there - find a Starbucks!!

Mary-Anne is just a little gem.

Lots of Love

Hi again
Mary Anne is such a beauty! And potty trained already that is fantastic. My two bits (though I'm sure you tried everything) - movement and singing. It makes me feel better anyway! Keep those pictures coming, your happiness is so infectious!
